General education requirements are often the slowest, most expensive part of a degree, and they’re rarely the reason you enrolled. If you’re going to college to become a cybersecurity analyst, a software developer, or a healthcare administrator, college algebra and intro psychology can feel like a detour.
They’re still required. But you have more than one way to complete them. CIAT partners with Sophia Learning and StraighterLine, two self-paced online platforms whose courses transfer directly into CIAT programs. Used well, they can lower your total cost and shorten your time to graduation.
This guide explains how each platform works, how credits move to CIAT, and how to plan your gen eds so every course counts.
Both are online course providers that offer college-level general education and prerequisite courses on a subscription model. Neither grants degrees. Instead, the American Council on Education (ACE) reviews and recommends their courses for credit, and partner colleges like CIAT approve specific courses for transfer.
What makes them different from a traditional college class:

Both platforms cover similar ground, so the right choice usually comes down to which courses you need and how you like to work. Some students use both.
The process is straightforward on both platforms:
StraighterLine courses covered by CIAT’s partnership agreement come with guaranteed credit transfer, and CIAT’s college transfer page lists both platforms as accepted general education sources alongside CLEP.
CIAT’s associate and bachelor’s degrees include gen ed categories such as English and communication, math and quantitative reasoning, natural sciences, and social and behavioral sciences. Courses commonly available through the partner platforms include:
Your advisor will match specific courses to your program’s requirements.
The partnerships also cover prerequisites for select bootcamps. The clearest example is the AAPC CPC Bootcamp, which requires foundational knowledge of:
Students without that background can complete these courses through Sophia or StraighterLine before enrolling. If you’re coming from a clinical role, our guide to non-clinical healthcare jobs for career changers explains how that path works.
The biggest time savings comes from moving gen eds out of your program schedule. Instead of taking a college algebra course in sequence, you can finish it on your own time, before you start or alongside your technical coursework.
That matters because CIAT runs on accelerated 5-week courses. Every gen ed you clear in advance is one fewer course in your program sequence, which means you reach your technical core and industry certifications sooner.
StraighterLine reports an average course completion time of about 28 days, though your pace depends on your schedule and the subject.
With a membership model, the more courses you complete in a membership period, the lower your per-course cost. A focused student who clears several gen eds during a multi-month plan can pay a small fraction of what the same credits would cost at standard tuition rates.
Your exact savings depend on your program, the courses you transfer, and how quickly you finish. The most accurate way to see the numbers is to ask a CIAT advisor for a personal financial projection that factors in transfer credits, scholarships, and other financing options.
Sophia and StraighterLine are only one part of CIAT’s transfer options. You can combine them with:
CIAT accepts up to 75% of eligible credits toward a degree or certificate, and transfer evaluations are usually completed within 24 to 48 hours. There’s also a dedicated transfer scholarship.
Yes. CIAT partners with Sophia Learning, and approved courses passed with a 70% or higher are sent to CIAT automatically. Your advisor will confirm which courses apply to your program.
Yes. StraighterLine is a CIAT partner, and courses within the partnership agreement carry guaranteed credit transfer.
It depends on the courses you need and how you want to pay. Sophia includes courses in the membership with a two-course active limit. StraighterLine’s monthly plan adds a per-course fee but also offers unlimited multi-month plans. Many students choose based on which platform offers their required courses.
Talk with your advisor about timing. Many students complete partner courses before starting a program, but they can also fit into your plan alongside CIAT coursework.
Yes, for select bootcamps. The AAPC CPC Bootcamp prerequisites (Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology I and II) are available through both platforms.
CIAT accepts up to 75% of eligible credits earned toward a degree or certificate program.
Both platforms offer a free trial. Sophia’s free trial requires no credit card and has no expiration.
