CIAT Home Lab Workshop Overview

Workshop Description
This workshop is a hands-on, instructor-led build session where students assemble and configure a basic home lab using the equipment issued through the required prerequisite coursework. The focus is a practical demonstration and guided build of core infrastructure—compute, storage, and networking—so students leave with a working lab foundation they can extend for future learning.

Who Should Attend
Students who have completed the prerequisite coursework and want a guided, end-to-end demonstration of how to build and configure a functional home lab using their issued equipment.

What’s Included

  • End-to-end instructor demonstration: assemble, connect, configure, and validate a home lab
  • Core concepts and best practices for a beginner-friendly lab (organization, cabling, and documentation)
  • Basic networking setup (addressing, connectivity checks, and simple segmentation as applicable)
  • Compute and storage setup basics (initial configuration, baseline settings, and verification)

Prerequisites
Completion of the required prerequisite coursework (e.g., CIS101A & CIS101B and CIS101A & CIS102B courseware) and access to the issued lab equipment used in those courses.

Workshop Details
One-day, 4-hour workshop with extensive demonstration and guided build steps. Students will follow along on their own equipment when possible.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to plan a simple home lab layout and document your setup
  • How to connect core components (compute, storage, and networking) safely and correctly
  • How to perform initial configuration and basic validation tests
  • How to troubleshoot common setup issues (power, connectivity, addressing, and configuration mismatches)
  • How to secure and maintain a basic lab environment with beginner-friendly best practices
  • How to use the home lab as a platform for future technical practice and coursework
