CIAT National City Campus

About National City

Found in San Diego’s South Bay, National City is a multicultural melting pot that lies just minutes from the U.S. / Mexico border. This waterfront neighborhood, the second oldest in San Diego, has a ton to offer both locals and visitors alike in terms of outdoor recreational activities.

National City is known for its fantastic parks such as Pepper Park, located right on the water of the Sweetwater Channel and next to the Pier 32 Marina. This 5.5-acre retreat hosts a complete playground and picnic area, along with opportunities for fishing and boating. If you’re looking for something more landlocked, try Kimball Park just a couple miles northeast of Pepper Park. Here you will have access to a baseball field as well as tennis and basketball courts.

Perhaps what’s most special about National City is its unique, decades-old relationship with the U.S. Military. Naval Base San Diego, or the 32nd Street Naval Station, calls this neighborhood home and stations the Pacific Fleet, a squadron of over 50 ships and 190 tenant commands, here in the San Diego Bay. This extensive base spans 13 piers with a population of over 24,000 military personnel and 10,000 civilians.

Locals take pride in their association with the armed forces, which gives the neighborhood a strong and noble identity. The city honors this proud relationship with the National City War Memorial, dedicated in 1948 to fallen service members in an effort to immortalize not only their service to their country, but their roles within San Diego’s families and communities.
