IT Challenge Exam

IT Challenge Exam Requirements

Students who are looking to accelerate the completion of their certificate or degree program may opt to take CIAT’s IT Challenge Exams for course credit. These challenge exams are designed for students who have already demonstrated competency in the course material through previous industry work experience, formal education, DIY training courses, or self-study.

Students are required to take the challenge exam in a secure, live, virtual proctored testing environment. Retakes of the challenge exams are not allowed. If a student takes a challenge exam and does not pass, the student will be required to take the full course to achieve the course credit or take the associated industry certification exam for applicable transfer credit.

Policies & Procedures: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, CIAT charges a non-refundable fee of $150 per exam.  If the student passes the exam, then the student will earn course credit for the related exam, without requiring the full tuition cost (standard 4-credit class = $2,440). Credit card payment for the exam will be required prior to scheduling the exam. Complete the Sign-Up form below to start the process and receive help scheduling your exam.

An individual challenge exam is required for each 4-credit technical class. If the course is designed as a 2-part, 10-week course, then 2 challenge exams will be required to earn the complete 8 credits. In the case of a 10-week course, students can opt to take one challenge exam for partial credit (4 credits), or two challenge exams for full credit (8 credits).

For example, the Networking Fundamentals courses consist of two, five-week courses (Networking Fundamentals Part 1, Part 2). Two challenge exams will be required to ensure earn course credit for the complete 10-week course (8 credits).

Students may challenge up to 25% of courses in a certificate or degree program by successfully passing the course final exam on their first attempt. CIAT will accept a maximum of 75% of the credits towards any given program (transfer credits or a combination of transfer and challege credits).

All CIAT technical courses are eligible for the challenge exam process. General education courses are not eligible; however, there are similar opportunities to earn transfer credit for general education courses including CLEP exams. Some challenge exams may require advanced notice for scheduling availability. If a student is challenging the first entry-point course in a certificate or degree program, the student will be required to complete and pass the challenge exam prior to being registered for the next subsequent course.

All prospective students and active students are eligible to take any challenge exams, however, students only have a single attempt to pass the exam. If a student takes a challenge exam and does not pass, the student will be required to take the full course to achieve the course credit or take the associated industry certification exam for applicable transfer credit.

We always encourage students to take the industry certification exam as these in-demand certifications are critical for maximizing employment opportunities. Students may also request an evaluation of transcripts for technical courses taken at other accredited colleges.

If you have previously failed the associated industry certification or would like to take advantage of CIAT’s unique unlimited certification policy, we encourage you to register for the full course.

CIAT’s certification vouchers and unlimited certification attempt policy are only provided to students who take, pass, and pay the full course tuition. Students who opt to take the challenge exam for course credit are not eligible to receive a complimentary industry certification exam.

Challenge exams are scheduled on an as-needed basis for one or more students at a time. Scheduling will vary based on demand.

Students will have up to 90 minutes to complete the challenge exam (equivalent to the time limit for the course final exam).

The challenge exams are provided through a secure, live, virtual proctored format to ensure academic integrity.  Students will be required to have a webcam and will be required to remain on camera through the entirety of the exam.

If a student does not have a personal computer with a functioning webcam, the student may apply for our Loaner Laptop program.

Students are not required to come to campus but may opt to take the challenge exam on campus during our regularly scheduled final exam dates. The 2022 final exam schedule is available here: https://www.ciat.edu/hybrid-campus/

Our learning objectives for each course align closely with the exam objectives for the associated industry certification exam from CompTIA, Microsoft, Cisco, etc. We encourage you to research the exam objectives for the associated exam to ensure you are confident with the material that may be covered in the CIAT challenge exam.
